Some of us do not know who we are, hence the nature of the relationship we must have with God. True knowledge will not only humble us before God but cause us to appreciate him. David knew that he was a nobody but a mere shepherd boy, and the least in his family of shepherds, hence did not deserve the extent of God’s favour upon his life.
Later in David’s life he impregnated Uriah’s wife, caused him to be killed in battle, and married his wife. Bewildered by God’s unrestrained favour on his life, he in 2Samuel 7: 18, who am I, O Lord GOD, and what is my house, that you have brought me this far?
Examples of those who God favoured
In a world of unbelief in God, Noah found favour because he believed and acted on God’s word. Genesis 6: 8 says but Noah found favour in the sight of the LORD. God grants special favour to those he desires to set free. Genesis 39: 21 says but the LORD was with Joseph and showed him steadfast love; he gave him favour in the sight of the chief jailer.
Moses found favour with God when he desired God’s presence always. Exodus 33: 15-17 say… and he (Moses) said to him (God), if your presence will not go, do not carry us from here (Egypt)… The LORD said to Moses, I will do the very thing that you have asked; for you have found favour in my sight, and I know you by name. God favours the righteous. Psalms 5: 12 says for you bless the righteous, O LORD; you cover them with favour as with a shield.
God granted special favour to Gideon when he commissioned him for his work. Judges 6: 14-16 say then the LORD turned to him (Gideon) and said, go in this might of your and deliver Israel from the hands of Midian; I hereby commission you. He responded… my clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family. The LORD said to him, but I will be with you. Every favour is approved by God. Daniel 1: 9 says God allowed Daniel to receive favour and compassion from the palace master.
God grants favour to the righteous. Proverbs 12: 2 says the good obtain favour from the LORD, but those who devise evil he condemns. Proverbs 14: 9 says… the upright enjoy God’s favour. Mary, mother of Jesus, found favour with God because she was upright and ordained to be the mother of Jesus. Luke 1: 30 says the angel said to her, do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God. God favours taking away public ridicule. Elizabeth, mother of John the Baptist said in Luke 1: 25 this is what the Lord has done for me when he looked favourable on me and took away the disgrace I have endured among my people.
What time does God grant favour?
God grants favour in his own appointed time and will. Psalms 102: 13 says you (God) will rise up and have compassion on Zion, for it is time to four it; the appointed time has come. Only God decides on his appointed time to grant favour to whom. No one can force God’s favour. We must be patient and wait for the Lord’s time and season for every activity though sometimes it appears long.
Ecclesiastes 3: 1-8 say for everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to throw away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to throw away; a time to tear, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace.
Do we know who we are?
We must know who we are before God. God loves everyone as his child. He will not break his covenant of love with us but fill our joys and our mouths with laughter. We must simply apply ourselves to why God favoured the down trodden such as Noah, Moses, Gideon, and the place of righteousness in God’s heart. He is a sovereign God who works in his season without fail. By the covenant blood of Christ Jesus, we are part of his grand scheme of blessing and favour. Remain holy in God’s sight to receive his favour.
