David knew that no mortal including himself was fully righteous but sinful. He also knew sinners were disqualified from God’s favour yet he continued to receive God’s favour. In his confused mind, he asked God in 2Samuel 7: 18, who am I, O Lord GOD, and what is my house, that you have brought me this far? David knew his weak background, the huddles he had overcome, and God’s blessings on his life. His conclusions are in his book of Psalms and as scripture says. So why did God favour David the way he did?

David was humble

Psalms 146: 8 says he was humble before the Lord. He was also penitent before God and said in Psalms 51: 17… a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise. Isaiah 57: 15 says God dwells with those who are contrite and humble in spirit to revive them (paraphrased). Isaiah 66: 2 says… but this is the one to whom I will look, to the humble and contrite in spirit, who trembles at my word. In the same spirit of humility, David also cherished God’s word. He said in Psalms 97: 10 the LORD loves those who hate evil; he guards the lives of his faithful; he rescues them from the hand of the wicked.

David showed faith

David said in 1Samuel 17: 26 who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God? He said in verse 32, let no one’s heart fail because of him; your servant will go and fight with this Philistine. He continued in verse 45, you come to me with sword and spear and javelin; but I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts… whom you have defied. He said at verse 46, this is the day the LORD will deliver you into my hand. David was not cowed by his circumstances, but moved by the power of God at work in his life.

David spoke God’s truth

David admitted his guilt and confessed to the prophet Nathan in 2Samuel 12: 13 I have sinned against the LORD. Nathan replied, now the LORD has put away your sin; you will not die. John 8: 32 says you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free. David applied himself to be truthful to God. John 4: 24 says God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth. David accepted God’s chastisement. Proverbs 3: 11-12 say my child, do not despise the Lord’s discipline or be weary of his reproof, for the LORD reproves the one he loves, as a father the son in whom he delights.

David loved the Lord

He said in Psalms 26: 8 O LORD, I love the house in which you dwell, and the place where your glory abides. God’s place of dwelling and his glory were in his heart so God kept his covenant loyalty and favour with him. Deuteronomy 7: 9-10 says… the faithful God maintains covenant loyalty with those who love him and keep his commandments. Based on his relationship with God, he wrote in Psalms 33: 18 truly the eye of the LORD is on those who fear him, on those who hope in his steadfast love. He kept the Jewish commandment said in Joshua 23: 11, be very careful, therefore, to love the LORD your God.

David was faithful

1Samuel 26: 23 says the LORD rewards everyone for his righteousness and his faithfulness. King Solomon confirmed David’s faithfulness to God in 1Kings 3: 6 you have shown great and steadfast love to your servant my father David, because he walked before you in faithfulness, in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart toward you. David said of himself in Psalms 4: 3 but knows that the LORD has set apart the faithful for himself; the LORD hears when I call to him. Praying to God, he said in Psalms 26: 3… I walk in faithfulness to you. On his priority, Psalms 119: 30 says I have chosen the way of faithfulness; I have set your ordinances before me.

David trusted God’s steadfast love

He said in Psalms 33: 5 the earth is full of the steadfast love of the LORD. David said in Psalms 103: 17 it is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear him. (Also 2Chronicles 5: 13). On his faith, Psalms 21: 7 says for the king trusts in the LORD, and through the steadfast love of the Most High he shall not be moved. In prayer, he said in Psalms 25: 7 do not remember the sins of my youth or my transgressions; according to your steadfast love remember me, for your goodness’ sake, O LORD. Testifying, he said in Psalms 32: 10 many are the torments of the wicked, but steadfast love surrounds those who trust in the LORD. He linked it with knowing God’s statute, Psalms 119: 64.

David had God’s grace

Paul referred to the grace decades later in 2Corinthians 12: 9 my grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness. God’s promise in Hebrews 13: 5 I will never leave you or forsake you. Paul affirmed this grace when he said in Romans 8: 38-39 for I am convinced that… nothing will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Jesus confirmed God’s grace to mankind thus in Matthew 28: 20… I am with you always, to the end of the age. God’s unfailing presence with us avails his unlimited grace upon our lives.

God swore to David his love

Psalms 89: 49 says Lord, where is your steadfast love of old, which by your faithfulness you swore to David? In God’s love is his mercy. He described God in Psalms 86: 15 as merciful and gracious. David prayed in Psalms 40: 11 do not, O LORD, withhold your mercy from me… keep me safe forever. In God’s love is the assurance of his security. David said in Psalms 57: 3 he will send from heaven and save me.

God’s love encompassed his faithfulness. God said in Psalms 89: 24 my faithfulness and steadfast love shall be with him; and in my name his horn shall be exalted. In God’s love, we taste his nature. David’s personal testimony said in Psalms 97: 10 the LORD loves those who hate evil; he guards the lives of his faithful; he rescues them from the hand of the wicked. God’s love has no end. David said in Psalms 100: 5 the LORD is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations.

God will bless us as he did for David if we will agree with David by his conclusions and examine ourselves accordingly. If we are confused with who we are and God’s plan for our lives, let us go back to inquire from God. Job 12: 13 says with God are wisdom and strength; he has counsel and understanding. In our confusion, let us be closer with Jesus. Psalms 32: 9 says do not be like a horse or a mule, without understanding. Whose temper must be curbed with bit and bridle, else it will not stay near you.

Proverbs 3: 5-6 say trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Do not be overwhelmed, God said in Jeremiah 29: 11 for surely I know the plans I have for you, says the LORD, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope. Ask Jesus who you are?
