In the book of Numbers 17: 1-13 the Lord talks about how his chosen representatives shall blossom. He instructs Moses that each house must have a representative for him who shall bear his staff. Among the representatives from each house or tribe of Israel, he shall choose one as the head staff bearer. Each staff bearer was to inscribe his name on the staff. As proof of those he had chosen, he said in Numbers 17: 5, and the staff of whom I choose shall sprout; thus I will put a stop to the complaints of the Israelites that they continually make against you.
Who is God’s staff bearer?
Everyone is God’s staff bearer in a unique way. We are assigned different duties in different ways with varied skills and abilities in the same God’s vineyard. We will be identified by our sprouting. Jesus said in Matthew 7: 16, 20, you will know them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thorns, or figs from thistles? How does God identify us? When God appoints, he exalts spiritually with his signs.
God assured Joshua in Joshua 3: 7, “This day I will begin to exalt you in the sight of all Israel, so that they may know that I will be with you as I was with Moses. In the book of Numbers as we have referred to, God ordered staff bearers to each house or tribe in order to silence their complaint against Moses. Jesus has also called each of us whoever we are to bring praise to God. Jesus said in Matthew 21: 16, “Yes; have you never read, ‘Out of the mouths of infants and nursing babies you have prepared praise for yourself?”
Are we God’s true staff bearers?
The staff symbolize a call to a divine duty. Revelation 11: 1 says then I was given a measuring rod like a staff, and I was told, “Come and measure the temple of God and the altar and those who worship there. A staff bearer must focus on the duty entrusted to him as the Lord’s chosen vessel with authority to execute God’s divine will. Jesus said to his disciples in Luke 10: 19, see, I have given you authority to tread on snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing will hurt you.
A staff bearer must hold his instructions as sacred and holy. Jesus said in Matthew 21: 13; Mark 11: 17, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer’, but you are making it a den of robbers.” He should be a true shepherd for his flocks. Jesus said in John 10: 11… the good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. He must provide comfort to the sheep. Psalms 23: 4 says your rod and your staff–they comfort me. The staff bearer must be an example to the tribes and houses using God’s will as the standard. Isaiah 42: 6 says I am the LORD, I have called you in righteousness, I have taken you by the hand and kept you; I have given you as a covenant to the people, a light to the nations. Are we true staff bearers?
Are we sprouting as God’s chosen?
By sprouting, a staff bearer must be alive in spirit in righteousness. 1 Peter 1: 15 says as he who has called you is holy, be holy yourselves in all your conduct. To spout, a staff bearer must first be dead to sin, then sprout in righteousness in Christ Jesus. Romans 6: 11 says so you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. Sprouting means spiritual growth. 1Peter 2: 2 says like newborn infants, long for the pure, spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow into salvation. Everyone is an infant in Christ.
God determines sprouting, hence life originates from God. He has shown us how to sprout, to accept him into our hearts. Jesus said in John 10: 10, I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly. In God is found no death but life just as Jesus said in John 11: 26, everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. God gives life and renews life to his chosen. Paul wrote in Galatians 2: 20, it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. Jesus said in John 14: 19, because I live, you also will live. Are we sprouting?
God promise to true staff bearers
David wrote in Psalms 37: 25-26, I have been young, and now am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread. They are ever giving liberally and lending, and their children become a blessing. How are we sprouting to glorify God through Christ Jesus?
Prayer
Dear Lord Jesus Christ, we have arrogated to ourselves positions and titles of honour which we do not deserve. We have not sprouted as your chosen office bearers and we are sorry. Come into our hearts and give us a refreshing direction by your staff by which we may touch perishing souls. Let us wait for your sprouting signs to know our assigned duties so we may attend to them in truth and honesty. May your grace lead us to holiness as you are holy. Accept our prayer in your holy name, Amen!!
Send us your prayer request so we may join you in prayer
