While many need light, others also want darkness. For the children of God, to the extent that the Lord is light, we must love the light. While darkness hides what we must see, Jesus, who is the light, exposes the truth which is hidden. Jesus said in John 8: 12, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”  Jesus’ light is that which radiates life eternal because life by meaning is not death. He said further in John 9: 5, while I am in the world, I am the light of the world. The world is not limited to the earth but incorporates the universe. Thus, Jesus remains as its light.

Jesus is the light because in him resides the light as part of his being. John 1: 4 says, in him was life, and the life was the light of all mankind. So, life and truth are part of Jesus’ light, hence, he wants us to take advantage of his light. He said in John 12: 35, walk while you have the light before darkness overtakes you. It will be too late after death to seek to take advantage of the light. Jesus cautioned in John 3: 30, everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. No matter for how long the darkness of evil is hidden from the light of truth, it shall be exposed one day for John 1: 5 says, the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

What is the way to the light?

Job asked in Job 38: 19-20, “What is the way to the abode of light? And where does darkness reside?… Do you know the paths to their dwelling? Surely you know, for you were already born! You have lived so many years! Only Jesus knows the way to God which is through him because he alone is the light. The way to the light is to be part of it by walking in it.

1John 1: 7 says if we walk in the light, as he (Jesus) is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his (God) Son, purifies us from all sin. Walk in the light is described as the fruit of the light in Ephesians 5: 9, for the fruits of the light consist in all goodness, righteousness and truth. Paul says in Ephesians 6: 11, put on the full armour of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. Romans 13: 12, let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armour of light.

The armour is described in Ephesians 6: 14-18 saying, stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.

The way to the light also includes love for 1John 2: 9-10 say, anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister is still in the darkness. Anyone who loves their brother and sister lives in the light, and there is nothing in them to make them stumble. Without love, light is darkness. We must believe absolutely in the light, who is Jesus. John 12: 36 says, believe in the light while you have the light, so that you may become children of light. The way to the light is through our heart by faith while we have breath.

How do we keep close to the light?

We must let the light shine in us so as to lead others to God. Whoever comes to Jesus becomes light by his power and that light must shine to beam the way to Jesus, so, he said in Matthew 5: 16, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. Let us therefore uphold whatever deeds honour God. Ephesians 5: 8 says, live as children of light.

To live as children of light, Hebrews 12: 5-6 say, “My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.” Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father? We must not begrudge God. Ephesians 5: 14-15 say, make every effort to live in peace with everyone and be holy, without holiness no one will see the Lord. See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God.

Reflection

Is Jesus our light? Are we walking in his light? Let us take caution that 2Corinthians 11: 14 says and no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. Without the light, no one can see God.
