God never left us alone when he created us. Jesus said in Matthew 28: 20 I am with you always, to the end of the age. God’s Spirit has always been with us throughout all generations. Job 34: 22 says there is no gloom or deep darkness where evildoers may hide themselves. He continues to show interest to date.

God asked in Isaiah 49: 15 can a woman forget her nursing child, or show no compassion for the child of her womb? Even these may be forgotten, yet I will not forget you. Accordingly, God says in Jeremiah 29: 11 for surely I know the plans I have for you, says the LORD, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope.

How does God show his interest?

God shows interest in our affairs in two ways. He encourages us when we do right but admonishes us if we do wrong or are likely to err from his ways. When we do right, God assures us in Proverbs 12: 12 the wicked covet the proceeds of the wicked, but the root of the righteous bears fruit.

When we do right

God said in Psalms 1: 3 they are like trees planted by streams of water, which yield their fruits in its season, and their leaves do not wither. In all that they do, they prosper. We further read in Jeremiah 17: 8 they shall be like a tree planted by water, sending out its roots by the stream. It shall not fear when heat comes, and its leaves shall stay green; in the year of drought it is not anxious, and it does not cease to bear fruit.

When we go wrong

Proverbs 3: 11-12 state, my child, do not despise the Lord’s discipline or be weary of his reproof, for the LORD reproves the one he loves, as a father the son in whom he delights. Oftentimes, we do not know our way spiritually so God reproves us. Matthew 7: 13-14 says, enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the road is easy that leads to destruction, and there are many who take it. For the gate is narrow and the road is hard that leads to life, and there are a few who find it. Jesus said in Luke 13: 24 strive to enter through the narrow door; for many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able.

God sees all the ways

Whichever way or direction we chose, God is aware and may encourage us or discipline us as a loving Father does to his children he loves. Jeremiah 23: 24 says who can hide in secret places so that I cannot see them? Says the LORD. Do I not fill heaven and earth? Says the LORD. God sees, hears, and knows everything about us because we have his spirit in us wherever we are who communicates with the Father on each and every event. David said in Psalms 139: 2 you discern my thoughts from far away

What is chastisement?

It is an act of scolding or punishment by the Lord for our sins or iniquities or wrong doing. It is to correct a behavior, to deter future mistakes or errors and to restore obedience to the Lord. Chastisement is that divine orchestration of punishment or rejection for our reproof, to make man complete, equipped for every good work, for our conviction of sin, for our correction from sin, for our training in righteousness, and for our proficiency for every good work.

When do we feel God’s chastisement?

Sometimes we feel God is distant from us, or he is cold towards us, or our soul is empty. At that juncture, we must reflect and come back to Jesus rather than walk away. 1Peter 2: 4 says come to him, a living stone, though rejected by mortals yet chosen and precious in God’s sight. When we follow our heart’s desires rather than what God wants, we may go through rejection.

We feel rejected when we complain; when we reject God and his Holy Spirit; when we reject the word of God; when we reject God’s way and his choice for us. We feel rejected when there is a barrier between us and God so our prayers are not answered. Isaiah 59: 1-2 says the Lord’s hand is not too short to save, nor his ear too dull to hear. Rather, your iniquities have been barriers between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear. God said in Proverbs 1: 28 he will not answer their calls because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the LORD.

We also sometimes feel the absence of God or that God has departed from us when everything in our lives begins to go negative. Job 30: 16-20 say days of affliction have taken hold of me… I cry to you and you do not answer me. In trials, Job 36: 21 says do not turn to iniquity; because of that you have been tried by affliction. Satan can touch our lives only with God’s permission. In Job 2: 6 the LORD said to Satan, very well, he is in your power; only spare his life.

Satan however needs God’s permission to touch us because of Jesus’ blood. 1Corinthians 6: 19-20 say or do you not know… that you are not your own? For you were bought with a price. Colossians 3: 3 says for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. God has hidden our lives in Christ Jesus in him. His permission or consent is therefore required before we can be touched unless we commit sin. Isaiah 49: 16 says see, I have inscribed you on the palms of my hand; your walls are continually before me.

Do you feel chastised by God? Examine your life and return to Christ Jesus.
