God’s word is his communications with us. It carries with it all the power and authority in God. Jeremiah 1: 10 says, see, today I appoint you over nations and over kingdoms, to pluck up and to pull down, to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant.” So, our successes and failures depend on God’s word. God’s word makes or unmakes us what we are and ought to be here and hereafter.

God’s word is also God himself. It is written in John 1: 1, In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. Further, the word of God is God’s presence with us. Jesus said in Matthew 28: 20, I am with you always, to the end of the age. We cannot live without God because we belong to God. It is written in Deuteronomy 32: 6, Is not he (God) your father, who created you, who made you and established you?

We reject God at grave consequences. Jesus said in Matthew 12: 27; Luke 11: 19, therefore they (God’s words) will be your judges. God’s word is life for it is written in Deuteronomy 30: 19, I call heaven and earth to witness against you today that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curse. Choose life so that you and your descendants may live. Life and blessings come from obeying God’s word. Death and curse come from disobeying God’s word. What is God’s word to us?

God’s word prunes our lives

God’s word is for our inspiration, rebuking and correction. Paul says in 2 Timothy 3: 16, all scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that everyone who belongs to God may be proficient, equipped for every good work. Good work is inspired by God’s word and always comes from him. It distinguishes good from evil.

Paul said in Hebrews 4: 12-13, the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing until it divides soul from spirit, joints from marrow; it is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. Do we use God’s word for good or evil? We will render an account to God soon, are we ready?

God’s word enables sound upbringing

God’s word imparts knowledge to the young and old. David said in Proverbs 1: 8; 6: 20, hear, my child, your father’s instruction, and do not reject your mother’s teaching. Paul said in Ephesians 6: 1, children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Paul said further in Colossians 3: 20, children, obey your parents in everything, for this is your acceptable duty in the Lord

Jesus cautioned parents in Matthew 18: 6; Mark 9: 42; Luke 17: 2, “If any of you put a stumbling block before one of these little ones who believe in me, it would be better for you if a great millstone were fastened around your neck and you were drowned in the depth of the sea. Solomon said in Proverbs 22: 6, train children in the right way, and when old, they will not stray. Do we train our children based on the word of God?

God’s word enables successful life

God said in Joshua 1: 7-8 only be strong and very courageous, being careful to act in accordance with all the law that my servant Moses commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, so that you may be successful wherever you go. Broken homes are not conducive for a successful Christian living so Pau said in Ephesians 5: 25, husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her. He said also in Colossians 3: 19, love your wives and never treat them harshly

To wives, he said in Ephesians 5: 22-24 be subject to your husbands. Peter also said in 1 Peter 3: 1, wives, accept the authority of your husbands… to show purity and reverence of your lives… Do not adorn the outward… but the inner self with the lasting beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is more precious in God’s sight. God’s word is sufficient for every situation as found in Ephesians 6: 18; Philippians 4: 6; Matthew 10: 30; Luke 12: 7. How do we measure our successes in life, in Christ or in the world?

God’s word reveals life hereafter

We are often led astray because we do not apply the word of God in our lives. Hosea 4: 6 says my people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. So, which knowledge about life hereafter does God want us to know? It includes Hebrews 9: 27, that it is appointed for mortals to die once, and after that the judgment; Revelation 2: 10, be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life; Revelation 3: 11, I am coming soon; hold fast to what you have, so that no one may seize your crown

A lake of fire awaits those who will lose their crowns for it is written in Revelation 20: 15, anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire. Jesus depicted what will happen in his story of Lazarus and the rich man in Luke 16: 19-31. Are we sure our names have been written in God’s book of life? If not, we must repent, confess and accept Jesus.

Prayer

Dear Lord Jesus Christ, we acknowledge your word of life as our only life line. Let your word be our food and drink by which we may be fed.  By your word, please prune our lives to bear fruits worthy of the kingdom. Keep us in check on our heavenly journey so we may not be disqualified at the end of the race. Let the knowledge of life hereafter be our caution always to keep the faith. Grant us the grace for a successful life and with our families in you in your holy name, Amen!!
