God’s word is God himself made manifest in his word. It carries with it his same attributes including truth, power, authority, purity and life. John 1: 1 says, in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. God’s word is not different from him who gave it. In like manner, our words are not different from us. Jesus said in Matthew 12: 36, I tell you, on the day of judgment you will have to give an account for every careless word you utter.
The lodgment of God’s word must always be in our hearts. Moses said to the Israelites in Deuteronomy 6: 6 says keep these words (God’s statutes and ordinances) that I am commanding you today in your heart. God further instructed how his word should be handled. They should meditate on it daily, observe it, and teach it to their children daily. In compliance, David said in Psalms 119: 15, I will meditate on your precepts, and fix my eyes on your ways. This charge goes for all who desire to walk with God.
It is also recorded in Deuteronomy 11: 18, you shall put these words of mine in your heart and soul, and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and fix them as an emblem on your forehead. The reference to heart, soul, sign on the hand and fixing it as an emblem on the forehead means it is a physical text but a spiritual text which relates to the inner man. It cannot be treated as a novel, history or text book but a spiritual text which only God by the Holy Spirit can teach, interpret and give effectual meaning to it.
Joshua says it must be a necessary or indispensable integral part of our lives. Joshua describes it as the basis of a prosperous and successful life upon its observance. Joshua 1: 8 says this book of the law shall not depart out of your mouth; you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to act in accordance with all that is written in it. For then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall be successful. God is asking us today how we treat his word. God also wants us to know what the cardinal issue is concerning his word of life.
God’s word is about God’s nature
Having sound knowledge of God will enable us to have and maintain a lasting relationship with God. This is the central theme of God’s word. Scripture says the Lord is God, Deuteronomy 7: 9. God is awesome, Psalms 70: 4. God is love but hates sin, Nehemiah 1: 5, Psalms 36: 7; Jeremiah 32: 18. God shows his love through Jesus by the Holy Spirit, Romans 5: 5.
God’s love is inseparable by Christ Jesus, Romans 8: 35-39. God is forgiving and merciful, 1 Kings 8: 23; John 3: 16; Ephesians 2: 4. God is righteous and holy, Psalms 7: 9, 11; 116: 5; Matthew 6: 33. God is exalted by justice, holiness and righteousness, Isaiah 5: 16. God is slow to anger, Exodus 34: 6; Numbers 14: 18; Psalms 86: 15; 103: 8; 145: 8; Nahum 1: 3. God is the King of Kings, and the Lord of Lords, 1 Timothy 6: 15; Revelation 17: 14; 19: 16.
God is the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end of all things visible and invisible, known and unknown, Isaiah 42: 21; Revelation 1: 8; 21: 6; 22: 13. God’s sent Messiah to us is Jesus Christ, 1 John 4: 9; John 3: 15-16. God proved his love for us through the death of Christ, Romans 5: 8. God and his Son Jesus Christ are the same yesterday and today and forever, Hebrews 13: 8.
These are only very limited references to God’s attributes. No book or material or documentary can adequately describe, contain or explain God’s full nature because it is beyond human comprehension. Paul said in 1 Corinthians 1: 20, has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? He also said in 1 Corinthians 3: 19 for the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. Knowledge of God’s word led by the Holy Spirit rather than with our carnal knowledge, we will be able to dispel all foolish arguments about God and his word. Paul cautioned in Colossians 2: 4, be careful that no one may deceive you with plausible arguments.
Paul said in 1 Corinthians 10: 3-5, indeed, we live as human beings, but we do not wage war according to human standards; for the weapons of our warfare are not merely human, but they have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every proud obstacle raised against the knowledge of God, and we take every thought captive to obey Christ. What knowledge do we have about God and what arguments do we raise against God? What is the source of our wisdom?
Desire the fruits of God’s word
God’s word produces countless good fruits which include peace, Acts 10: 36, 40. It brings healing, Psalms 107: 20; Matthew 8: 8. It creates, Genesis 1: 1-31. It saves, Acts 2: 41, 47; 5: 14; Romans 10: 3. It is a shield against danger, 2 Kings 6: 9; 2 Timothy 2: 19. It revives and resurrects, Matthew 11: 5. It delivers the afflicted 2 Corinthians 1: 3-4. It blesses, Genesis 2:3; Luke 6: 28. It protects, John 17: 12-15. It motivates, Acts 20: 32. It gives an inheritance and grace, Acts 20: 32.
God’s word comforts us, 2 Corinthians 7: 13; 2 Thessalonians 2: 16-17. It is God’s presence with us, John 1: 1. It builds our faith, Mark 11: 22; Romans 5: 1. It is our shield, Genesis 15: 1; 2 Samuel 22: 36; Proverbs 30: 5. It is our weapon of warfare, 2 Corinthians 10: 4; Romans 13: 12; Ephesians 6: 11-13. It rebukes and corrects, 2 Timothy 4:2; Hebrew 4: 12. These are but a few out of unlimited fruits.
Christ Jesus has assured us in the scriptures including John 14: 13, I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. Jesus repeated similar promises in John 14: 14; 15: 16; 16: 23; 16: 24. In order to enjoy the unlimited fruits of the word, we must have God’ word in our hearts and receive His grace in addition.
The first step is to confess our sins to God and to ask for forgiveness through the blood of Jesus. 1 John 1: 8 says if we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 1 John 1: 10 also says if we say that we have not sinned, we make him (God) a liar, and his word is not in us. We must invite God through Christ Jesus now to lead us with his word.
Prayer
Dear Lord Jesus Christ, your word is the truth and none other. For lack of true knowledge, we are misled to hold on to what in truth cannot save us but destroy us. Your word has expounded to our knowledge God’s nature and by that we appreciate the God we serve through you enabled by the Holy Spirit. Forgive us of our wasted lives based on false doctrines packaged as the light. Be our teacher as we meditate on your word so we may not treat it as other books but divine and holy. Keep your word in our hearts as part of our soul. We pray in your holy name, Amen!!
