The Psalmist wrote in Psalms 119: 105 your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. The word is Christ Jesus. We know this from John 1:1, In the beginning was the word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. In explaining further, John 1: 14 says and the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth, we have beheld his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father.

It is thus crystal clear that the psalmist’s reference to the word was the persona of Christ Jesus. Accordingly, whenever we engage with the word of God, we engage with Christ Jesus. We also disengage with Christ Jesus whenever we renege on the bible, the word of God.

How is Christ the light and lamp?

Christ was that light and lamp which Davit talked about. Je said in John 8: 58 “Very truly, I tell you, before Abraham was, I am.”  He also referred to David’s statement in Psalms 110: 1 the LORD says to my lord, “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies your footstool.”  Jesus said in Matthew 22: 42-46; Mark 12: 35-37; Luke 20: 44, David himself calls him Lord; so how can he be his son?

The lamp to the feet meant the source of strength and agility to stand or keep going. Jesus does not allow our feet to slip so we fall. His light gives confidence to the feet. So, Christ Jesus gives us the needed confidence even in our despair.  The light to the path is our guide and compass in life’s journey. We are cautioned in Proverbs 14: 12; 16: 25, there is a way that seems right to a person, but the end is the way of death. Jesus is the light to our path so we do not miss our providential way to God.

We need Jesus’ light and lamp always back to God.  Jesus said in John 14: 6, I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. He being the gateway will illuminate our right path back home. We cannot keep on the right path without Jesus’ light. He said in John 8: 12 “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life

What was David’s desire?

David wanted two things; to avoid the pitfalls of darkness; and to be led by God’s compass of light. This should be our prayer if we want to identify with eternal life. Isaiah 9: 2 says the people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness — on them light has shined.

Isaiah’s statement was fulfilled in Jesus in Matthew 4: 14-16, so that what had been spoken through the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled;… the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned. David and Isaiah knew that the world was a dark spiritual place which needed God’s light in the nature of Christ Jesus. We need God’s light today.

The security of God’s light

The bible says of God in 1 Samuel 2: 9 he will guard the feet of his faithful one, but the wicked shall be cut off in darkness; for not by might does one prevail. In whatever we do and wherever we may be, we need the light of God as our security. God said in Isaiah 42: 16 I will lead the blind by a road they do not know, by paths they have not known I will guide them. I will turn the darkness before them into light, the rough places into level ground. These are the things I will do, and I will not forsake them.

God’s light beams our way to uncover the hidden. God said in Isaiah 45: 3 I will give you the treasures of darkness and riches hidden in secret places, so that you may know that it is I, the LORD, the God of Israel, who call you by your name. Daniel 2: 22 says he (God) reveals deep and hidden things; he knows what is in the darkness, and light dwells with him. Luke 1: 78-79 say by the tender mercy of our God, the dawn from on high will break upon us, to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Jesus said to Paul, then called Saul, in Acts 26: 17-18 I will rescue you from your people… to whom I am sending you to open their eyes so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God. Is Christ Jesus the lamp to our feet and a light to our path by his word?

Prayer

Dear Lord Jesus, in our world of darkness we invite you to be the light to our path so we may not miss our way or fall. Be the lamp to our feet so we may be firmly rooted in you when trouble comes. Let your light and lamp drive away our fears and give us the peace to be true and bold in you for our eternal security in heaven. We humbly pray in your holy name, Amen!!
