This is a confession that Jesus was our Lord. David was inspired by the Holy Spirit to say so even when Jesus had not revealed himself to the world. He said in Psalms 139: 13, for it was you who formed my inward parts; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. David likened our complex composition to knitting. God said in Isaiah 44: 21 remember these things, O Jacob, and Israel, for you are my servant; I formed you, you are my servant; O Israel, you will not be forgotten by me. (Read also Isaiah 43: 1)
The truth of our confession
Often than not, we forget our maker. Isaiah 44: 24 says… remember, who formed you in the womb: I am the LORD, who made all things, who alone stretched out the heavens, who by myself spread out the earth. We will miss our way like many others if we forget our roots. Even before we were formed by God, he knew us and our purpose. Jeremiah 1: 5 says, before I formed you in the womb I knew you.
We were formed in Christ Jesus which fact does not change. John 1: 3 all things came into being through him (Jesus), and without him not one thing came into being. Just as without Christ Jesus, nothing was made, so is the fact that without his blood there is no salvation made possible. All it takes is to surrender and confess him as Lord and Saviour. What is our difficulty in acknowledging Jesus as David did?
How to confess Jesus
We must allow Christ Jesus to forever be part of us. We become liars if we confess him as Lord when he is not part of us. Jesus said in John 6: 56, those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them. He said in John 15: 4-5 abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me. I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing.
Jesus explained what it means to abide in him in John 15: 10, if you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandment and abide in his love. This is further explained in 1 John 3: 24, all who obey his commandments abide in him, and he abides in them.
Paul related abiding in Christ to the pain of childbirth in Galatians 4: 19. It demands fortitude to pull through in pain in order to experience joy in the end. No woman goes into labour to fail but to travail until the child is born. Just as childbirth cannot be hidden, so did Jesus say in Matthew 10: 32; Luke 12: 8 everyone therefore who acknowledges me before others, I also will acknowledge before my Father in heaven. In effect, Jesus must be visible in our lives wherever we are as his children.
Why we confess Jesus
We confess and acknowledge Jesus in surrender for the following reasons;
We are his sheep
Jesus said in John 10: 11, I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. Were we not his, he would not lay his life down for us, a fact we must acknowledge. He said in John 10: 14, I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me,… I lay down my life for the sheep. As his sheep, we must recognize him for our protection and our needs.
He will not reject us
Jesus said in John 12: 48 the one who rejects me and does not receive my word has a judge; on the last day the word that I have spoken will serve as judge, for I have not spoken on my own, but the Father who sent me has himself given me a commandment about what to say and what to speak. Jesus receives without rejecting all who receive him by his word.
All we have belong to Jesus
Without Jesus, we would be nothing. John 17: 10 says all mine are yours, and yours are mine; and I have been glorified in them. He bore our burden of sin on the cross and became glorified by the Father. He shares his glory with us, therefore if his is ours, then we must glorify him in return for righteousness and holiness in our lives. Can we say with David to Jesus, we are yours?
He conquered Satan for us
Jesus conquered Satan from his dominion over us. John 16: 33 says… take courage; I have conquered the world. Jesus said in Revelation 3: 21… I myself conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne. We are his because he has conquered us from the hands of the enemy. He is our captain in battle and to him and his command we surrender at all times to his glory and honour.
He released us from captivity
Jesus said in Luke 4: 18 ‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.” This was said of Jesus as a prophecy in Isaiah 61: 1. Whoever wants freedom in any form, confess and surrender to Jesus now.
He justified us before the Father.
Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 6: 6, you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God. Paul also wrote in Romans 4: 25, he was handed over to death for our trespasses and was raised for our justification. We read from Romans 5: 18, just as one man’s trespass led to condemnation for all, so one man’s act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all. The terror of death is vanquished when we are justified in the blood of Christ Jesus.
He has purchased us for value
Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 6: 20, for you were bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body. Paul also wrote in 1 Corinthians 7: 23 you were bought with a price; do not become slaves of human masters. The price of purchase is his blood, the value of which cannot be measured. By his blood, we have the grace to live. However, many abuse the grace. Paul therefore cautioned in Romans 6:1, shall we continue to sin, that grace may abound? Paul was against teaching precepts as God’s doctrines.
Let us not say we are thine only with our lips, but with the substance of pure heart.
Prayer
Dear Lord Jesus, in all our ways, we have surrendered to you with our lips not our hearts. We now confess that we are yours in totality. Be our Lord and Saviour not on our lips but in our hearts. Let your will be done in us so we may dwell in you to the glory of the Father in your holy name, Amen!!
Send us your prayer request so we may join you in prayer
