In the beginning when God created the world, it was in darkness. God said in Genesis 1: 3 Let there be light; and there was light. God also said in Genesis 1: 14 Let there be lights in the dome of the sky. His light separated day from night; signs and seasons; days and years. In Genesis 1: 15-18, God made three lights, the sun to rule the day; the moon to rule the night; and the stars to complement the moon. And God saw that it was good (summarized)

The three lights represent the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. At creation, God established His presence, superintended the affairs of the world, and separated light from darkness. He is God of the day and night. He reigns in the day and in the night. Matthew 4: 16 says the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned. Jesus has been, is and remains the light of the world. He said in John 8: 12, I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.

How permanent is the light?

God’s light is always with us spiritually even if we do not see it. Jesus said in Matthew 28: 20, I am with you always, to the end of the age. Jesus also affirmed his presence as the light in John 9: 5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world. Jesus has not left us as orphans. He is quoted as saying in Hebrews 13: 5, “I will never leave you or forsake you.”

God’s light requires us to be separated from darkness into His light. 1Peter 2: 9 says: but you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people, in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. The light is marvelous or splendid because the works of the light defies comprehension. It is explained in John 1: 5, The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it. God’ s light defeats darkness.

Why God spoke light into the world

The reasons are many among which we will discuss a few as follows;

For our security and protection

We gather this from Psalms 18: 28-29, It is you who light my lamp; the LORD, my God, lights up my darkness. By you I can crush a troop, and by my God I can leap over a wall. God’s light is to brighten our lives; to disperse our gloom; to give us power to defeat our enemies; and to overcome our challenges. In God’s light, we are victorious. 1John 1: 5 says God is light and in him there is no darkness at all. We become pure in his light. What darkness is engulfing us? Let us come to God’s light.

For His glory and honour

God spoke light into the world for his glory. Revelation 21: 23-24 says and the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God is its light, and its lamp is the Lamb. The nations will walk by its light, and kings of the earth will bring their glory into it. All who come to Jesus receive his light to glorify his name. The blind, lame, deaf, dumb, afflicted, poor, sick and even the dead rose up and left rejoicing. The presence of Christ Jesus in our situation renders other distinctions void. Come to Jesus now.

To transform us into His lights

God spoke light into the world so that we may also be lights as He is. Jesus said in 5: 14 You are the light of the world. Whoever associates with the light receives the grace to become light. John 1: 12-13 says but to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God. God’s light restores our hope. Isaiah 9: 2 referenced in Matthew 4: 6 says the people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in the land of deep darkness–on them light has shined. Are we transformed by the blood of Christ Jesus to reflect his light in our world of darkness?

To keep us from falling

God spoke light into the world so we may not stumble. John 11: 10 says but those who walk at night stumble, because the light is not in them. Some of us stumble because we do not have the light of God with us as our stabilizing force. The Israelites said in Deuteronomy 31: 17, Have not these troubles come upon us because our God is not in our midst? God’s light is in his word which is Christ Jesus. Psalms 119: 105 says Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. What light guards our feet and our paths in this life? Jesus is the only true land capable light in all situations. Keep standing with Jesus.
