God speaks through us because we are his instruments for his messages to the world. However, in many ways and on many occasions, we have been obstructive, distortive or not available when God needs us. God wants his channels of communication to be free without obstruction but available at all times. What obstructs us as channels for God’s use, and distorts God’s messages to the world is sin.
We read from the book of Isaiah 59: 1-2 see, the Lord’s hand is not too short to save, nor his ear too dull to hear. Rather your iniquities have been barriers between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear. God knows of our rebellion as Israel did and could not hear from God. Isaiah 58: 2 says yet day after day they seek me and delight to know my ways, as if they were a nation that practices righteousness and did not forsake the ordinance of their God; they ask of my righteous judgments, they delight to draw near to God. God wants to speak through us in truth.
How will God speak through us?
God speaks through us so we would have clear instructions about his will. God spoke through Abraham by word of mouth, Genesis 12: 1; through Jacob by an angel, Genesis 28: 12-13; through Moses by the burning bushes, Exodus 3: 2-4; through Paul by a bright light, Acts 22: 7-8; through the disciples by Jesus’ personal invitation, Matthew 4: 19; Mark 1: 17. All these and uncountable messages were clear messages by the Holy Spirit meant for their present and future generations for which we are now beneficiaries.
God will speak through us when he resides with us. He said in Revelation 3: 20, I am standing at the door, knocking, if you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to you and eat with you, and you with me. When we are one body with Christ, he will speak through us. He will also speak through us when we have cleansed tongues and lips. Isaiah 6: 7 says the seraph touched my mouth with it (live coal) and said: “Now that this has touched your lips, your guilt has departed and your sin is blotted out.” God speaks to us in different ways as he may choose and given the circumstances.
When can God speak through us?
God may speak through us when we become his anointed servants in truth. After Elijah had revived to life again the only son of the widow of Zarephath, she said 1Kings 17: 24, “Now I know that you are a man of God, and that the word of the LORD in your mouth is truth.” The power in God’s word truly resides in the mouths of his chosen ones. James 5:16 says the prayer of a righteous man has great power in its effects.
Paul wrote in 2Corinthians 5: 17 so if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation; everything old has passed away; see everything has become new! May our tongues and lips be cleansed by the Holy Spirit through the blood of Christ Jesus so God will speak through us. God speaks through those he trusts. Psalms 8: 2 says out of the mouths of babes and infants you have founded a bulwark because of your foes, to silence the enemy and the avenger. Can God trust us he trusts children because of their purity?
God will speak through us when we covenant with him to keep his words. Isaiah 59: 21 says and as for me, this is my covenant with them, says the LORD… my words that I have put in your mouth, shall not depart out of your mouth, or out of the mouths of your children, or out of the mouth of your children’s children, says the LORD, from now and forever. Our commitment to God is forever. Ephesians 4: 29 says let no evil talk come out of your mouths, but only what is useful for building up, as there is no need, so that your words may give grace to those who hear. This is explained in Colossians 3: 8, but now you must get rid of all such things–anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive language from your mouth.
Will God avoids speaking through us?
Are our mouths filled with cursing, deceit and oppression? Do we utter mischief and pursue iniquity? Are we boastful and flattering with our tongues? Do we speak the truth? Do we take reproach against others? Psalms 34: 13-14 say keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking deceit. Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.
David said in Psalms 39: 1, “I will guard my ways that I may not sin with my tongue; I will keep a muzzle on my mouth as long as the wicked are in my presence.” We must be alert and confess our sins. David prayed in Psalms 120: 2, “Deliver me, O LORD, from lying lips, from a deceitful tongue.” Who guards our lips as God’s instrument of communicating with his people?
