Whenever we make reference to the word “awesome” the thoughts that come to mind are the extremes of impressiveness or extraordinary feats. It may manifest in power, excellence, wisdom, knowledge, imagination or acts beyond the ordinary. It is for these qualities and more which we attribute to God that qualifies him as an awesome God although sometimes without knowledge.
God is the creator of all things
Genesis 1: 1-5 says God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep; and the Spirit of God was moving over the face of the waters. And God said, let there be light, and there was light. And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And here was evening and there was morning, one day. Some of God’s creation acts are in Genesis 1-2.
Ephesians 3: 9 affirms that God created all things. Colossians 1: 16 says for in Christ all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or authorities – all things were created through him and for him. Revelation 4: 11 also says worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honour and power, for thou did create all things, and by thy will they existed and were created.
The world, its galaxies and planetary systems; its synchronization; how it spins and rotates; its operational gravitational forces; the nature and existence of the seas, waters, air, sun, moons, stars, rocks, and content speak volumes of God’s awesome nature.
Controversy of creation
Controversialists say the earth was not created by God but rather it came into existence by a theory called “the big bang”. This is an attempt to understand the awesomeness of the world. This alone confirms that God is an awesome God because his works are beyond human comprehension, belief or understanding. Christians do not have to look far for the bible has all the answers we need.
Where is the biblical evidence?
The simplest way to prove a point or to show evidence is by the testimony of an eye witness to an event which is in controversy or being controverted by another theory. What and where then is our evidence or testimony? Our witness to creation is Jesus Christ. John 1: 2-3 says He (Christ Jesus) was in the beginning with God; all things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made. Hebrews 1: 2 also says in the last days God has spoken to us by a Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. Jesus is therefore a credible witness.
We know scripture to be right and true because it was written under the function of the Holy Spirit. John 16: 13 says when the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak of his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. When the spirit of truth came upon Paul, he said in Colossians 1: 17 He (Christ Jesus) is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
Jesus himself also said in John 12:48, he who rejects me and does not receive my sayings has a judge; the word that I have spoken will be his judge on the last day. John 5: 3 also says the words I speak are not mine but from the Father who sent me. Jesus said in John 18: 37, for this I was born, and for this I have come into the world, to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears my voice. Our Lord God Almighty is an awesome God and the creator of the world. Hebrews 13: 9 says do not be led away by diverse and strange teachings; for it is well that the heart be strengthened by grace, not by foods, which have not benefited their adherents. We must let the word of God stand in awe because God is awesome in nature. Do we confess this to all men in all situations?
Provides the gateway to heaven
Apart from creating us, God has provided us with the gateway to eternity in heaven. Genesis 28: 17 says the house of God is awesome, and the gate of heaven. This means entry into the house of God prepares us for heaven. How often do we patronize the house of God? Jesus has also described the gateway as the narrow way. Matthew 7: 14 says for the gate is narrow and the way is hard, that leads to life, and those who find it are few. Have we searched and found the narrow gateway?
The surest gateway is and through Jesus Christ. Jesus said in John 14:6, I am the way, and the truth, and the life, no one comes to the Father, but by me. The Jews conceded this fact when they said to Jesus in Luke 20: 21, teacher, we know that you speak and teach rightly, and show no partiality, but truly teach the way of God. Jesus also says in Matthew 7: 13 that enter by the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is easy, that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. Easy paths and shortcuts in life rather than hard work may destroy us. What path to life have we chosen?
God does not want us to perish but have eternal life hence he has provided for us the best gateway to life in eternity through Jesus Christ our Lord. It is only the awesome God who cares about the future and fate of those who are his and will assure them of the best gateway to him. God has provided Jesus as the gateway so that we may be with him where he is. Jesus said in John 14:3, and I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. Are we ready?
Prayer
Thou awesome Lord God Almighty, you are the King of kings and Lord of Lord. You were before all things and shall continue to reign in majesty even when all things are no more. No authority surpasses your power so we submit to your authority and bow at your feet before your throne of grace. Abase us and continue to show us the way that we may not miss it. We pray in the blood of Jesus Christ, Amen!!
