We are led to revisit this topic by grace through divine knowledge and inspiration. Many are confused about the concept of trinity because we explain it with our carnal knowledge without being led by the Holy Spirit as the teacher. For this or such reason, some also reject the concept of trinity.
Paul said in 1Corinthians 2: 10-13 these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God… and we speak of these things in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual things to those who are spiritual. In effect, divine matters are better explained by divine knowledge.
What is the meaning of trinity?
Trinity means One God in three persons. There is only one God but manifests in three persons, the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit. Many question this truth because it defies human reasoning. This can be explained by the only wise God. In Romans 16: 27 God is the only wise God.
In answer to the question, Paul wrote in 1Corinthians 2: 14, the natural man receives not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. Paul also wrote in 1Corinthians 3: 19, for the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. Paul wrote in 1Corinthians 1: 25 for God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom.
Understanding the relationship
In Genesis 1: 26 God said, “Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness; and let them have dominion over … the earth.” Certainly, God was not speaking to himself but with the Son and the Holy Spirit. As a people created in God’s image, we have a similar composition comprising our body by which we are known; our spoken words; and our breath which is our lifeline.
All these components function as one and the same person yet every credit due either from our personality based on our words or deeds or lifeline is given to our persona as one body. Jesus oftentimes illustrated this with the vine and the branches; or abiding in him and him in us as one body.
God the Father
Like our persona, God is the Father is the Godhead persona known in the past as the God of Israel and in all other cultures and most religious beliefs. All inexplicable works or interventions are attributable to him. He is the perfect, all wise, all knowing, ever present, loving, merciful, ruler, maker of the universe and eternal God. Paul said in Philippians 4: 20 to our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen. His functions include the final authority regarding divine decisions.
Jesus said of his second coming in Matthew 24: 36; Mark 13: 32, “But about that day or hour no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Jesus said to the two sons of Zebedee in Matthew 20: 23; Mark 10: 40… to sit at my right hand and at my left, this is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.
During his arrest prior to his crucifixion, he said in Matthew 26: 53, do you think that I cannot appeal to my father, and he will at once send me more than twelve legions of angels? On the cross, Jesus said in Luke 23: 46, “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.” Jesus deferred to the Father on all critical issues as by the relationship established although they were one which will be explained in due course. The Father is the persona known hence Jesus was crucified for saying he and the Father are one
Jesus Christ the Son
Jesus is God’s spoken and written word. John 1: 1 says in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. If the word was God and Jesus was the word, then Jesus is God and lived with God just as our words live with us in our bodies as one persona. The words we speak are not separate or distinct from us. John 1: 14 says the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth. The transforming power of the word made Jesus become flesh to dwell among us.
At creation, Jesus was the word spoken by whom God created the world. John 1: 3 says all things came into being through him, and without him (the creative word) not one thing came into being. Jesus resided in God as the word from the beginning as one and the same persona. God said In Genesis 1: 3-31,” Let there be light” and there was light. Jesus affirmed that he was the light in John 8: 12; 9: 5… “I am the light of the world. Jesus truthfully said in John 10: 30, the Father and I are one.” He said in John 14: 10 do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works. Our words come from within us.
God will judge the world by his word which is Christ Jesus. Jesus said in Matthew 28: 18, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. The authority in God’s words is Christ Jesus. Jesus said in John 5: 22, the Father judges no one but has given judgment to the Son. Jesus said in John 12: 48-49 the one who rejects me and does not receive my word has a judge; on the last day the word that I have spoken will serve as judge, for I have spoken not of my own, but the Father who sent me has given me commandment about what to say and what to speak. Jesus reflects God’s glory. Hebrews 1: 3 says he is the reflection of God’s glory and the exact imprint of God’s very being, and he sustains all things by his powerful word. Who is Jesus to us?
The Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit is God’s holy breath. Just as our breath cannot be distinct from us as a separate or different persona, so is the Holy Spirit inextricably part of God’s persona. God extends it to us as our lifeline and on the day we lose it, we die a spiritual death. It is the breath God breathed into Adam and he became a living being, Genesis 2: 7. The Holy Spirit also monitors God’s creation for Genesis 1:2 says… a wind from God swept over the face of the waters.
The breath of God naturally comes from within God and cannot be distinct from God. Jesus said in John 14: 26 but the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you. John 16:13 says when the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak of his own… The Holy Spirit is described as “he” because he is part of God. The Holy Spirit is the advocate against sin with the Father in 1John 2: 1.
Paul said of the Holy Spirit in Romans 8: 11, just as the Spirit raised Jesus from the dead, he will give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit that dwells in you. (paraphrased). Jesus affirmed in John 11: 25, “I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. There is no distinction between God, Christ Jesus and the Holy Spirit. They all emanate from the God head as one unit. So it is only Jesus and the Holy Spirit who can attest truthfully to God’s nature. Jesus said in John 1: 18; 6: 46 no one has ever seen God. It is God the only Son, who is close to the Father’s heart, who has made him known.
Reflection for the day
Reverence for one is reverence for the three and so is dishonour for one. Jesus said in Luke 10: 16 “Whoever listens to you listens to me, and whoever rejects you rejects me, and whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me.” He also said in John 13: 20, Very truly, I tell you, whoever receives one whom I send receives me; and whoever receives me receives him who sent me.”
Jesus is the word of God made flesh to show us the way back to God; and the Holy Spirit is the breath of God sent to revive us souls and to guide us. God the Father Almighty is the persona from whom Jesus and the Holy Spirit come. The three are one and inseparable. Let us embrace them for our spiritual good.
Prayer
Dear Lord Jesus, we are grateful for your knowledge of truth about the trinity. Humble us in our relationship with you as you did with the father. Philippians 2: 6 says though you were in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited. Let your will be done in our lives in your holy name. Thank you blessed Jesus for answered prayer, Amen!!
Send us your prayer request so we may join you in prayer
