Loneliness does not enhance our spiritual growth. Feeling the company of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ edifies him greatly and in that we become fulfilled. Loneliness suggests Jesus is not with us or that we need more than Jesus. He said in John 15: 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing.
Those in Christ Jesus must overcome loneliness using and relying on God’s word of life and his promises given. Deuteronomy 7: 9 says, know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who maintains covenant loyalty with those who love him and keep his commandment, to a thousand generations. His promises are true and Amen! What then are some of the promises and assurances?
God’s assurance by his word
Keep a warm companionship with God through his word. God asked in Isaiah 49: 15-16, can a woman forget her nursing child, or show no compassion for the child of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you. See, I have inscribed you on the palms of my hands. Your walls are continually before me. If we are engraved on his hands, certainly we are in inseparable company with him.
Do what will enhance your soul
God’s word says we are not alone. 1Corinthians 10: 23 says, “All things are lawful, “but not all things are beneficial, “All things are lawful,” but not all things build up. We may feel lonely and dejected but the question we have to answer is, is it helpful or beneficial for our spiritual growth? When the test of loneliness comes, 1Corinthians 10: 13 says no testing has overtaken you that is not common to everyone.
In such times, the examples of how others in the faith weathered similar storms must guide us. 2Corinthians 9: 8 says God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance. Do we count on God? Do we talk to God? Do we wait patiently on God in such times?
Lean on God’s assurance and promise
Rather than talking to God, we seek worldly companionship. God says in Psalms 50: 15 call on me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me. God waits for such moments to glorify his name. Psalms 27: 5 says for he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble; he will conceal me under the cover of his tent; he will set me high on a rock.
David knew what to do in troubled times. He said in Psalms 23: 1, the Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He said in Psalms 86: 7, in the day of my trouble I call on you (God), for you will answer me. If we seek God’s company diligently, we will find it, Proverbs 8: 17.
Appreciate God’s word and study it
Christians must appreciate the power in God’s word. Psalms 45: 7, 11, the LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. And says in verse 10,” Be still, and know that I am God! In effect, God is above all challenges we can ever imagine. David said in Psalms 116: 13, I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the LORD.
The God who called us while we were in the womb will not desert us. Joel 2: 32; Acts 2: 21; Romans 10: 13 say everyone who calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved. He saves every person, tribe, nation, race or language from every trouble.
Believe and have faith in God’s word
Psalms 119: 160; John 17: 17 say the sum of your word is truth. Proverbs 30: 5 says every word of God proves true. God said in Jeremiah 49: 11, leave your orphans, I will keep them alive; and let your widows trust me. Psalms 68: 5 says he Father of orphans and protector of widows is God in his holy habitation. In other words, God gives due attention to those in need. Do you need God’s company?
Prayer
Dear Lord Jesus Christ, we become lonely and empty in the spirit when we withdraw from you. In such challenges, help us to find what will enhance our souls and rather avoid what will destroy us. Help us to lean on your word for your promises never fail. Prepare our minds to study your word and believe it in our hearts and confess with our mouths that you are the Lord. Increase our faith in you that you are with us till the end of the age. We pray in your holy name, Amen!!
