The Holy Spirit leads us to know the mind of Christ Jesus. We need to know the mind of Christ in order to maintain a worthy relationship with him without complaining about situations we face in life. Our complaints are often subjective and devoid of divine direction which is a sin.
To give us eternal life
The mind of Jesus Christ is primarily to give us eternal life. Jesus said in John 10:10 that I came that they may have life, and have it more abundantly. We are vulnerable to sin and can easily miss eternity. Therefore all Jesus said and did and continues to do is for our good to gain eternal life and avoid hell.
With this knowledge we are led to appreciate him in obedience and humility. Jesus intends to lift us up from the doldrums of damnation. In John 12:32 he says, and I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to myself. He wants us to be where he is, this world is not our home.
To show us our identity
The mind of Christ is also to show us who we are and what the world is. Jesus says in Matthew 5:14, you are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Having no knowledge of who we are and the world we live in is most degrading and torturing. Knowing who we are gives us a sense of direction, motivation, dignity and the ability to confront challenges with confidence.
For lack of knowledge, we are tossed about in fear without direction. The relevance of light is to illuminate the path in darkness. Our status as light with Jesus then makes sense in our world of spiritual darkness. It is Jesus’ mind that we should not lose our light for he says in Luke 11:35, therefore be careful lest the light in you be darkness.
To share our burden
Jesus’ mind is to ensure that we do not perish but have everlasting life. We cannot carry our heavy burdens without any support, they are too heavy. In acknowledging this fact, Jesus said in Matthew 11:30, for my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. Jesus Christ intends to replace our burden with his.
Jesus intended to lift our burden by giving his life as ransom for many as recorded in Matthew 20:28 and Mark 10:45. He bore our sins in his body on the cross, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness and by his wounds we have been healed, 1 Peter 2:24. This is the mind of Jesus as a true friend, one who will lay his life down for another.
To show us who God is
Knowing the mind of Jesus demands that we know who God is. Jesus says in John 10:30, I and the Father are one. He says in John 14:9, He who has seen me has seen the Father. Through Jesus Christ, we need no further knowledge about God for he exemplified God.
The bible says in Matthew 17:5, this is my beloved son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him. It is written in John 6:40, for this is the will of my Father, that every one who sees the Son and believes in him should have eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. When we listen to Jesus by his word, we will know who God is.
To teach us God’s will
Knowing the will of God has often confounded generations. Jesus’ mind was and still is to bring us to this knowledge without which many have perished. Jesus said in John 15:10, If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. By obedience to his commandments, we are set apart for God in love.
His commandments are the written and spoken word. Worldly pleasures and standards are not in keeping with God’s will so we read in James 4:4, friendship with the world is enmity with God. This is why 2 Corinthians 6:17 says therefore come out from them, and be separate from them, says the Lord, and touch nothing unclean, then I will welcome you.
To show us the way to God
We are often confused with conflicting doctrines about the way to God. Jesus’ mind is to clarify this nagging confusion. Jesus said in John 14:6, I am the way, and the truth, and the life, no one comes to the Father, but by me.
Jesus says in effect, there is only one way which is through him; there is only one truth about this fact which is what he has said; and there is only one eternal life that is through him. Jesus says his life reflects the truth about how to qualify for eternity. All other contrary claims and doctrines are false and misleading towards damnation.
To reveal himself to us
Jesus intends us to know him as our Saviour and judge. As our Saviour, Matthew 1:21 says, for he came to save his people from their sins. His messages of repentance amply demonstrate this. Luke 19:10 also says, for the Son of man came to seek and to save the lost.
As our judge, John 5:22 says, the Father judges no one, but has given all judgments to the Son. In John 12:28 he says his word shall judge us on the last day. In John 10:9 he says, I am the door, if any one enters by me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, teach me your mind that I may apply wisdom to your instructions. Amen!!!
